Emergency Landing in Virginia

Yesterday, an airplane made an emergency landing in South Boston, Virginia. The news cited a fuel pump problem. I fly Cessna 172's where the fuel tanks are above the engine in the high wing, so a fuel pump is not entirely necessary. As a pilot myself, I understand that this sort of emergency is planned and trained for routinely. In order to obtain your pilots license you have to practice emergency landings. Part of the pilots practical test is for the Designated Pilot Examiner to pull the power from the engine while you are flying along and see how you react. The engine out checklist is usually right next to the pilot in the cockpit.

The pilot in South Boston Virginia landed the airplane on 501 a wide street. On the Emergency Checklist for engine outs is to first establish best glide speed then pick a place to land. Following those two pre-requisites, we then go into engine restart procedures. Best glide speed is essentially the speed that the airplane will get the most distance across the ground for distance descending. The reason we pick a place to land immediately is so that we keep the airplane, as we glide, near that place to land. In any event, the airplane in South Boston suffered some wing damage, a mail box got destroyed and no persons

were injured. That is a pretty good result from an engine out. Ideally there would have been no property damage. However, based on what the news reported, the pilot did a pretty good job. In older planes you can keep up with the maintenance but stuff happens.
