Virginia's New Cellphone Law Is Now In Effect

Virginia has a new hands-free driving law. January 1, 2021 is when the new law went into effect. Moving forward it is not a finable penalty to hold a mobile device while driving. The Law means that you cannot hold a mobile device in your hand for any reason while operating a motor vehicle in the commonwealth. It is the most stringent law to be passed in Virginia and will act as a deterrent for future distracted driving accidents. The first of the year is a great time to start new habits and this law is most certainly going to a good one to follow.

In 2018 approximately 2,841 people in the U.S. were killed from distracted driving accidents. The new Virginia Law takes aim at this statistic for the good of the citizens of the commonwealth. In a recent interview from local news of Bedford County Sheriff’s Office Cpl. Keith Peterson. Officer Keith asserted that now he can pull over drivers on their phone and actually make it count.  “Outside of someone specifically saying, ‘yes, I was texting and driving,’ the previous application of the law was almost unenforceable. This new law will now allow us to enforce distracted driving laws,” Peterson said.

Hands-free driving started on January 1, 2021 and now, driving with a phone in your hand for any reason is illegal.

Local authorities are putting out there own signs and billboards to remind drivers of the new rule. First ticket offenders will be fined $125 under the new law with a $250 fine for any subsequent violations.
